Search schools and universities
View all Crunchbase Company & Investment Data endpoints →Search Crunchbase school and university records by institution name, location and founding date. All four query parameters are optional. Use query for text contained in the school name; location accepts a location name, permalink or UUID, with identifiers available through Search Locations. The founded_after filter is inclusive: supply YYYY-MM-DD to request institutions founded on or after that date. The page parameter defaults to 1 and supports values from 1 through 100. No live response was captured for this operation. The following response layout comes from an unverified documented 200 response example, not an observed response contract. Its top-level fields are count (reported result count), current_page (page number), per_page (page size), total_pages (page count), next and previous (pagination navigation fields), and items (school records). Each example record contains id and uuid identifiers, name, link, image, rank, short_description, founded_on, categories and location. Categories contain id and name. Location contains city, region, country, continent, groups and ids. The example includes a null founded_on and a null previous field; do not assume every record has a founding date or every page has both navigation values. The example does not establish a fixed page size or a meaning for rank as an academic measure. Use results as institution-discovery candidates for review. They do not establish admissions availability, accreditation, an individual's attendance or alumni membership, or comprehensive campus coverage.

Use Cases
- Reconcile institution names encountered in professional education histories by reviewing school-name and location candidates, without treating a match as proof of attendance.
- Curate a geographically scoped school and university research shortlist using a location name, permalink or UUID.
- Research newer education institutions with an inclusive founding-date cutoff, while flagging missing founding dates for follow-up rather than inferring them.
- Enrich reviewed institution entries in a research catalog with the identifiers, categories and descriptions shown in the documented example, subject to response verification.
Frequently asked questions
Does the school-name query require an exact institution name?
The query parameter is documented as text contained in the school name, so a fragment such as stanford can be used. Case sensitivity and fuzzy matching are not documented. The query parameter is optional.
Which location values can I use to find schools?
The location parameter accepts a location name, permalink or UUID. Documented examples include London, United States and san-francisco-california. Use Search Locations to find identifiers instead of assuming a school ID is also a location ID.
Does founded_after include schools founded on the specified date?
Yes. The documented filter means founded on or after the supplied date, using YYYY-MM-DD format. The response example also shows a null founded_on, so do not assume every institution has a known founding date or that missing dates are filled automatically.
How do I paginate school search results?
Use page with an integer from 1 through 100; the documented default is 1. The unverified response example includes current_page, per_page, total_pages, next and previous, with previous shown as null. A fixed page size and live navigation behavior have not been verified for this operation.
Which school response fields have been verified in a live probe?
None for this operation: no live response was captured. An unverified documented example shows count, current_page, items, next, per_page, previous and total_pages. Its school records include id, uuid, name, link, image, rank, short_description, founded_on, categories and location. Treat those fields as example-based documentation rather than a guaranteed response contract.
Can school results prove accreditation, academic ranking or alumni membership?
No. This endpoint is documented for school and university discovery, not accreditation checks, admissions decisions or individual attendance verification. The example's rank has no documented academic interpretation, and the results should not be treated as a complete campus or alumni database.
