List Movie and TV Genre Filter IDs

View all Streaming Availability endpoints →

Fetch the supported movie and TV genre taxonomy with optional output_language set to en, es, tr or fr. The response is a raw array of objects containing id and name, with no pagination or enclosing genres field. The observed English response contained 21 pairs, including action/Action, comedy/Comedy, drama/Drama and scifi/Science Fiction. Use id values in the catalog search's comma-separated genres parameter, and use name for display rather than submitting translated labels as filter values. This endpoint returns the genre reference only, not matching titles, popularity rankings or per-genre catalog counts. A separately translated Chinese interface can display its own labels, but Chinese is not one of the documented output_language options.

API Features

Filter IDs separate from display names Keep the machine-readable id for catalog requests and the returned name for genre labels.
Compact genre reference array Parse the top-level array of id/name pairs without handling title metadata, service directories or cursors.
Common film and television categories Discover supported categories such as action, comedy, drama and science fiction rather than guessing accepted genre strings.
Documented genre-label languages Select English, Spanish, Turkish or French labels while using genre IDs as the request-facing taxonomy.

Use Cases

Frequently asked questions

Should a catalog genres filter contain translated labels or English names?

Use the returned id values, such as drama or comedy, separated by commas when needed. name is a display label; do not submit translated names as filter IDs. The catalog search's genres_relation controls how multiple IDs are combined.

Can output_language=zh return Chinese genre labels?

The documented choices are en, es, tr and fr, not zh. A Chinese interface can maintain its own display translations while preserving returned genre IDs for requests. Interface localization does not imply Chinese-language title metadata.

Does the genre reference include movie counts for each category?

No. It returns genre id and name pairs, not matching titles, popularity ranks or catalog counts. To discover titles in a genre, pass its ID to catalog search with a country and any other required constraints.

Do I need to paginate genres or read a genres wrapper?

No. The response data is directly an array of genre objects, with no pagination cursor or extra genres field. Iterate id and name pairs, and use the current response rather than assuming a fixed taxonomy size.
