Get Instagram Profile by Username or ID
View all Instagram Data API endpoints →Resolve a public Instagram account by username or numeric user ID. Pass username_or_id, e.g. the handle instagram or the ID 25025320; both forms resolve to the same record. The live-verified response wraps the profile in data: id, username, full_name, biography, follower_count, following_count, media_count, is_verified, is_private, profile_pic_url and profile_pic_url_hd, plus external_url, bio_links and account-category fields when present. Set include_about=true to add an about object with country and date_joined where the profile exposes them. A miss returns HTTP 200 with exactly {"detail":"Not found"} — treat it as a business-level not-found, not as a profile.

Use Cases
- Enrich creator candidates with account ID, biography, follower counts and verification status before shortlisting.
- Store timestamped follower_count snapshots to compare audience growth between collection runs.
- Resolve a handle to its numeric user ID once, then reuse that stable ID across the other endpoints.
- Gate account-dependent workflows on the detail='Not found' business result instead of retrying fabricated profiles.
Frequently asked questions
How do I look up the numeric user ID from an Instagram username?
Pass the username to username_or_id; the id field inside the response data is the numeric user ID. You can then use that ID with this and the other endpoints — both forms resolve to the same result.
How should I handle an HTTP 200 response whose detail is "Not found"?
That is a business-level miss: the target username does not exist or is not visible. Do not treat the response as profile data and do not retry immediately; record the miss and check the username spelling.
What is visible for a private Instagram account, and what cannot be retrieved?
A private account returns is_private=true plus the basic profile fields (bio, counts, avatar), but its posts, stories and follower/following content are not exposed.
