Get Recent Comments from a Subreddit

View all Reddit Posts, Comments & Community Data endpoints →

Pass a bare community name such as AskReddit in subreddit, without r/ or a URL. Omit cursor initially and reuse the returned meta.cursor for continuation within the same community. The observed response contains meta.status, meta.subreddit, meta.cursor, and a body array of comment records. Rows include id, name, author, body, body_html, created_utc, subreddit, score, ups, parent_id, link_id, link_title, link_permalink, and permalink. Use body for a comment's text and created_utc for its Unix creation time in seconds. The checked AskReddit feed returned 25 recent comments, including one created seconds before the request. This is a cross-thread comment listing, not a complete reply tree: replies was an empty string in observed feed records. Use link_permalink to retrieve selected discussion context with post-details. Neither a guaranteed delivery interval nor complete subreddit comment history is established. Keyword matching, alerts, and sentiment labels require client-side processing.

API Features

Recent comments across discussions Collect comment records from the named community without choosing an individual post URL first.
Source-post references Retain link_id, link_title, link_permalink, and parent_id to connect a comment to its surrounding discussion.
Comment text and UTC creation time Read text from each row's body and retain created_utc, author, and score for a timestamped feedback record.
Community-specific comment continuation Carry the returned comment-feed cursor forward with the same subreddit instead of reusing a post-list cursor.

Frequently asked questions

Should subreddit contain r/ or a full URL?

No. Pass only the community name, for example AskReddit. The live request used that exact bare name and returned a meta.subreddit value of AskReddit.

Is the comment feed shaped like the post-details reply tree?

No. Feed records use body for comment text and include post references such as link_id and link_permalink. The observed replies field was an empty string. Post-details uses content and nested replies arrays, so parse the two endpoints separately.

Does this endpoint provide real-time alerts or sentiment scores?

It returns comment data. The live feed contained comments created seconds before the request, but no delivery guarantee, built-in alerting, or sentiment classification was established. Schedule bounded polling and perform matching, deduplication, and analysis in your own application.
